The Senate Health, Education and Human Services Committee held a hearing on a bill to institute Competency Based Learning in NH (SB 82) and there were no opponents present. However, most people who understand that it is merely a repackaging of OBE and other school ‘reform’ initiatives based on constructivism and values education rather than academics. They are opposed to it because the cost does not justify the use of a system for which there are no proven results.
Furthermore it is NOT ‘local control’ of education as provided for in the NH Constitution.
Please listen to the hearing: Hearing on SB 82
We suspect supporters do not even really know what they are supporting and suggested they do more research on it.
There may be a few ideas within that are good, but the rest is simply OBE all over again.
You could write to the Senate Committee and ask they do more research on this system before attempting to impose it top down on all of NH. If you are familiar with it, you may want to suggest that it be ITL.
Here is some background information. We will post the House hearing as soon as available.
